So much was represented in Park University’s 7-6 win against Bellevue (Neb.) College in the finals of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
There was the redemption for the way last season ended in this same tournament, redemption for a blown four-run lead on the same field in late April and most important of all, a first-ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

Park University baseball coach Cary Lundy is not afraid to say he has high hopes for his team this season. The Pirates are already 8-0 and for Lundy, it is just the start of something big for his team this year. “Last year I think we played the fewest games of any team in the nation because of how bad the weather was,” Lundy said. “This year I made a conscious effort to go down south to Texas and play just to get our feet wet and get going. Our ballclub just needs to get out and play games. If we get enough games in I think we are going to have a pretty good team. I think the more we play the better we’ll be.” |

If you just looked at Park University’s record last year and saw 23-23 you might not think much. When you peak inside the numbers, you realize just how good this softball team was by the end of the year. After the Pirates were swept by Central Methodist on March 30, 2008, Park’s record stood at 5-17. Over the next month and 10 days, the Pirates went on an 18-6 spurt to win their conference with a 10-2 record and take the No. 1 seed into the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. |
