Park Hill-Park Hill South rivalry game will remain

Posted by billknust in Northland Prep Sports

While some rivalries remained in tact and new ones were formed when the state realigned the football districts, a significant one was lost for district competition. Park Hill High and Park Hill South will no longer be in the same district.

Park Hill will be in Class 5 District 12 with St. Joseph Central, Oak Park and Staley. Park Hill South will be in District 11 with Fort Osage, North Kansas City and Winnetonka. This came after it was announced they would be in different conferences last week as well.

With both schools being out of the same conference and district it means one of their non-conference, non-district games will be used up in the rivalry, but Reynolds said it was a game that will be played for the foreseeable future.

"I don't think it was ever a thought (to not play it)," Reynolds said. "Talking with coach (Park Hill athletic director Bill) Sobbe and him talking with coach (Park Hill South athletic director John) Sedler it was never an option. No. 1 it is a good rivalry. I don't think it has gotten out of hand where stupid things happen on the field or off the field. That probably has a lot to do with coach (Ron) Litchfield and what we believe in here.

"With coach (Mark) Simcox going over there, I don't think it is going to change at all. It will probably get better with the way kids act. The other thing is whoever the home team is on those types of games, you can't afford to not have the gate receipt from a game like that."

Reynolds said he had no qualms with the new districts, and said it only made the class tougher as a whole adding Staley to the mix.

"It's different, but at the same point at least the state is being consistent on all those things," Reynolds said. "They are going from geography and who is north and south of I-70, things like that. I would say that this next two-year cycle is going to be interesting. It doesn't make it any easier or any tougher because two good programs are going to be switching spots. It definitely makes Class 5 tougher in the city."
