More than $260 million in state and federal funds is being committed to wastewater and drinking water projects throughout Missouri.

Gov. Jay Nixon made the announcement Monday, Nov. 9, during a press conference at a construction site in Kansas City North.

Nixon cited the multiple benefits the projects would provide, in terms of jobs and the economy.

“People need to work now,” he said. “I’m confident this will provide a jump start to the economy after the first of the year.”

While not providing specific numbers with the projects not yet out to bid, Nixon said the construction could encompass thousands of jobs.

The funding for the work is coming from $146 million in federal Recovery Act Funds and $120 million in state funds, according to information supplied by the state.

Nixon said the funds for the projects would need to be obligated by Feb. 17, 2010.

In addition to the economic benefits, the governor said the projects should also create environmental benefits.

“There should be a lot less tainted water going into our state’s waters,” he said.

Among the Northland communities receiving funds for projects are Kansas City, $23,910,191; Liberty, $1,946,000; and Parkville, $612,048.
