Mayor Mark Funkhouser told a group of about 20 residents Wednesday, July 1, that he expected the $3 million needed to hire this year’s police academy graduates. Funkhouser, speaking at a town hall hosted by Northland Neighborhoods, said although the police budget was cut by the City Council this spring by $15 million, he was confident a portion would be secured to ensure those graduates would keep Kansas City residents safe, rather than patrol another jurisdiction’s streets. The mayor did not specify where those millions would come from. “I’m absolutely confident we’ll get that money to put those officers back in (the budget),” Funkhouser said.
